If you're on vacation with us in Gutenbrunn and fancy a real Waldviertel nature spot, you don't have to go far: The Lake Edlesberg lies in the municipality of Martinsberg and is often referred to as a natural lake „not far from Gutenbrunn“ described - Martinsberg is only approx. 3 km as the crow flies removed.
Embedded between Forest, meadows and riparian bogs the lake appears calm, pristine and a bit „like in the north“ - some even compare the atmosphere with Scandinavia.
Why Lake Edlesberg is so special
The lake (historically often called a „pond“) has an exciting past: it used to be - together with other ponds - the Water reservoir for wood panning. The power of the dammed water was used to transport tree trunks from the high altitudes towards the sawmills.
Today, Lake Edlesberg is one thing above all else: Pure nature experience. With around 14 hectares it is one of the larger bathing lakes in Lower Austria.
Getting there from Gutenbrunn: how to get there
- By car: From Gutenbrunn you can be at the lake in just a few minutes (depending on the route and starting point).
- Parking & starting points: There are access points around the lake - the best thing to do is to take your time and combine the lake with a walk (see below).

What can you do at Lake Edlesberg?
1) Swimming & cooling off (nature instead of outdoor pool)
In summer, the lake is a wonderful place to Cooling down - without the hustle and bustle, but with plenty of forest air. Many simply enjoy the shore, a walk around the water or a longer break with a view of the lake.

2) Walking & hiking: Lake circuit + Weinsberg Forest
Around Lake Edlesberg you can Circular routes and walks - sometimes directly on the shore, sometimes in the forest. Platforms such as komoot/outdooractive show several tour ideas in the area.
Favorite idea for guests:
- cozy Lake round
- followed by a short detour to the Weinsberg Forest (depending on desire & condition)
3) Fishing & boating: a paradise for fishing fans
If you like fishing, Lake Edlesberg is a well-known fishing spot: according to the operator, the lake was not fished since 1971 - Accordingly, large fish are also discussed there (please be sure to observe the current rules/licenses).
4) Winter tip: cross-country skiing in the area

Half-day excursion (relaxed):
- Morning: trip to the lake + leisurely walk around the water
- Break on the shore (take a picnic or snack with you)
- Return to Gutenbrunn - possibly a detour through Martinsberg
Day trip (active):
- Lake circuit + forest passages
- Swimming in summer / photo stops all year round
- Followed by a regional stop (depending on season/opening)
Best time for a visit
- Spring: fresh green, few people, very quiet
- Summer: Swimming, long evenings by the water
- Fall: Forest colors + „Scandinavian vibe“ particularly strong
- Winter: depending on snow conditions, cross-country ski trails & winter walks
