A lake like from the north - in the middle of the Waldviertel
Anyone looking for peace and quiet in the Waldviertel will sooner or later end up at the Edlesberg pond (often also Lake Edlesberg called). Nestled between forests, meadows and shoreline moors, it has an almost Scandinavian feel in places - quiet, dark, shimmering and wonderfully natural.
The pond is located in the municipal area Martinsberg, not far from Gutenbrunn, in the southwestern Waldviertel.
Swimming at the Edlesberg pond: natural & refreshing
The Edlesberg pond is considered Moor-iron bathing lake - depending on the light and background, the water may appear slightly reddish brown. This is not a „problem“, but typical for the environment.
What makes bathing here special:
- Nature instead of hustle and bustle: Lots of forest, little noise - ideal for switching off.
- Refreshment at altitude: The pond is located at around 870-876 m altitude - a real bonus on hot days.
- Gentle shore atmosphere: for swimming, cooling off, sunbathing and simply „unwinding“.
Tip: The atmosphere is often calmest early in the morning or later in the afternoon - perfect if you want to take photos or simply swim in silence.
Fishing: Relaxed fishing with the prospect of big catches
For many people, Lake Edlesberg is a real Fishing and leisure paradise. According to the operator, the lake has been 1971 no longer „fished out“ - accordingly, the large fish possible.
These include. Trout, carp, tench and zander (depending on stocking/level).
Important:
- Fishing is only permitted with valid fishing license/permit possible - inform yourself in advance about current rules, times and card reference.
Fishing tip for everyday lake fishing:
Take your time and go „quietly“ to the shore - at the Edlesberg pond, patience often wins: a quiet spot, clean mounting, little disturbance.
Walking, hiking & observing nature
Walking around the pond is wonderful - from a short walk to a circular route.
The combination of forest, moorland areas and water also makes the area exciting for nature observation (please be respectful: it is best to stay on the paths and not „trample“ on the banks).
A brief look at the history
The Edlesberg pond is not only beautiful, but also historically interesting: it was originally used as a Water reservoir for the wood flood used to transport logs with accumulated water to sawmills.
Practical tips for your trip
- Pack your things: Bathing shoes, towel, drinking water, sun protection - and for anglers: license/fishing permit + garbage bag for „leave no trace“.
- Consideration: Swimming, fishing and enjoying nature share the same space here. A little distance and peace and quiet helps everyone.
- Plan B: If it's windy on the shore: go for a walk - the forest often provides better protection than you think.
Conclusion
Whether Bathing, Fishing or Simply soak up the Waldviertel silenceThe Edlesberger Teich is a place that doesn't need a lot of „show“ - and that's exactly why it has such an effect. Pure nature, a clear feeling of speed and plenty of opportunities to make the most of your day.
