The Panorama Trail Gutenbrunn is a varied loop hike through the forests and highlands of the southern Waldviertel.
In addition, Hiking Trail No. 41 leads from the church square in Gutenbrunn over the Ulrichschläger Höhe to the Hirschenstein.
It then leads back to Gutenbrunn.
Along the way, quiet forest trails, gentle ascents, and impressive panoramic views alternate. On a clear day, the view extends toward the Ötscher, Schneeberg, Gesäuse, and Haller Mauern. The summit cross on the Hirschenstein is a special highlight of this hike.

The actual walking time depends on your fitness level, the breaks you take, and whether you make a detour to Hirschenstein. If you want to take your time enjoying the view or take photos along the way, you should plan for a little extra time.
Starting point at Kirchenplatz in Gutenbrunn
The Panorama Trail begins at Kirchenplatz in the center of Gutenbrunn. The starting point is easily accessible from our vacation apartments at Gutenbrunn 133.
Right at the start, hikers will encounter a short, somewhat steeper climb toward Birkenallee. After that, the trail becomes more pleasant and winds through the Waldviertel landscape typical of Gutenbrunn.
After about 500 meters, the trail branches off to the left. This is followed by a gentle climb of about two kilometers to the highest point of the loop hike, at approximately 959 meters above sea level.
View of the Ötscher and Schneeberg
After about 3.6 kilometers, you’ll reach the first major lookout point. On a clear day, an impressive view of the Schneeberg and Ötscher opens up from here.
It is precisely the contrast between dense forest and unexpected distant views that makes the Panoramaweg particularly charming. Short breaks offer an opportunity to enjoy the peace and quiet, take a deep breath, and let the Waldviertel landscape sink in.
The scent of the forest, the fresh air, and the vastness of the landscape make this hike a refreshing break from everyday life.
Through Ulrichschlag to the Ulrichschläger Höhe
The trail then continues on to the village of Ulrichschlag. There is a place to stop for refreshments there. Please check the current opening hours before your hike, as they may vary depending on the day of the week and the season.
After Ulrichschlag, one of the most beautiful sections of the hike begins. As you ascend to the Ulrichschläger Höhe, a sweeping view of the Ysper Valley opens up. On a clear day, St. Oswald, the Gesäuse, and the Haller Mauern are visible in the background.
This section is quite rightly called the Gutenbrunn Panorama Trail. The open landscape offers numerous beautiful photo opportunities and gives a special sense of the vastness of the southern Waldviertel.
The Hirschenstein with its summit cross
Following quiet forest trails, you’ll reach the intersection at Ödbauer after about eight kilometers. From there, another trail leads to Hirschenstein, which is about one kilometer away.
The Hirschenstein is located at an elevation of approximately 884 meters above sea level. Although it is not the highest point of the circular hike, its summit cross and beautiful view make it a special highlight of the tour.
There is also a summit logbook at the summit cross. Hikers can record their visit in it and leave a small memento of their hike.
Be sure to allow plenty of time for the detour to Hirschenstein. After a break at the summit cross, head back to the trail junction. Then follow the signs toward Gutenbrunn.
Return Trip to Gutenbrunn
The return route takes you back through the Weinsberg Forest. After the open, panoramic views, the surroundings become quieter and shadier. The hike comes to a pleasant close over the final few kilometers.
Finally, you’ll reach Gutenbrunn again and return to the starting point at Kirchenplatz. Since this is a loop hike, there’s no need to arrange transportation back.
Who is the Panorama Trail suitable for?
The Panoramic Trail is suitable for hikers with average to good physical fitness. However, given its length of more than ten kilometers, several uphill sections, and some unpaved forest trails, the hike should not be underestimated.
For experienced older guests, the hike is quite manageable under the right weather conditions. It’s important to allow plenty of time, take regular breaks, and wear sturdy shoes.
This hike is not suitable for people in wheelchairs, those using walkers, or guests with significant mobility issues. However, there are also shorter and easier walking trails around Gutenbrunn. Anna and Herbert are happy to help their guests choose a suitable route.
What should you pack in your hiking backpack?
For the Panorama Trail, we recommend:
- sturdy hiking boots with good traction
- enough water
- a small snack
- Sun and Rain Protection
- a charged cell phone
- Printed maps or a digital hiking map
- possibly hiking poles
- a small first-aid kit and blister bandages
You should also check the weather forecast before setting out. After prolonged rainfall, some forest trails may be wet or slippery. In winter, expect snow, ice, and trail markings that may be difficult to see in some places.
