4.06 kilometers of skating at Gutenbrunn
The Drei König Wegscheid skating trail is a short, challenging loop through the wintery Weinsbergerwald. The official route is 4.06 kilometers long, is rated as easy, and runs along a wide, groomed snow surface designed for the free skating technique. With an official duration of about one hour, the loop is well-suited for a concise training session, as a warm-up before a longer tour, or for multiple repetitions.
The skating track is not the same as the shorter skating loop at the Gutenbrunn biathlon facility. It is a separate attraction in the Drei König Wegscheid area. For guests staying at the Gutenbrunn vacation apartments, it expands the selection of classic cross-country trails and skating trails around Gutenbrunn.
Our GPS map shows both the official GPX track and the location of the Gutenbrunn 133 vacation rentals. A gold dotted line indicates the direction from the accommodations to the cross-country ski trailhead. This route marker is intended as a guide and is not part of the official GPX route.

What makes the skating track special?
Skating requires more space than classic cross-country skiing. The skis are pushed off to the side and glide in a V-shape across the groomed surface. For this reason, the course does not follow a narrow double track but rather a sufficiently wide, rolled track.
The official photos from the tour show a typical Waldviertel winter landscape with forest trails, snow-covered spruce trees, young forests, and open areas. This is not a large winter sports complex, but rather a nature-oriented skating loop in the Weinsbergerwald.
This route is suitable for guests who want to get some exercise and already have basic experience with the skating technique. The „easy“ rating refers to the nature of the route. Skating itself remains more technically and physically demanding than the short distance might initially suggest.
Who is this tour for?
The Drei König Wegscheid skating rink is particularly well-suited for:
- Beginners to skating who have already learned the basic techniques
- People returning to exercise who want to brush up on their movements
- Sporty cross-country skis for a compact training session
- Experienced skaters warming up
- Guests who would like to complete several timed laps
- Winter vacationers who switch between classic and skating techniques
- Cross-country skiers who want to work on weight transfer and the glide phase
If you've never been on cross-country skis before, you shouldn't try to learn the skating technique on your own on a long trail through the woods. A professional introduction on a suitable practice area will help you conserve energy and avoid falls.
Route of the Official GPX Course
The official GPX track is located west of Gutenbrunn in the wooded area near Drei König Wegscheid. It traces a varied loop with several changes in direction and a longer northern section.
The first waypoint in the GPX file is at 48.370049 degrees north and 15.075645 degrees east. The last waypoint is slightly offset. Therefore, once on site, pay close attention to the current signage and the designated running direction. The GPX line is a navigation aid and is not a substitute for the groomed trail.
Start at Drei König Wegscheid
When you start out, you should first check the current direction of travel, the trail conditions, and any possible closures. Begin your run at a relaxed pace and use the first few minutes to warm up. It’s harder to maintain proper form when your muscles are cold.
The skating trail leads from the starting area into the forest. The official trail initially heads north and then winds through the forest in a series of curves.
Forest paths and open areas
The trail combines shaded forest sections with more open stretches. As a result, the snow and ground can feel different from one lap to the next. In the shade, the surface often stays hard longer, while sunny spots soften more quickly in milder temperatures.
After fresh snow, the trail may be slower. After frost or a thaw, there may be harder and icy patches. You should always adjust your speed based on visibility, trail conditions, and your personal ability.
Return to the starting area
After about four kilometers, the official route leads back to the Drei König Wegscheid area. If you’re planning to go another lap, you should quickly check whether your technique and balance are still solid. When your legs get tired, your control decreases, especially in turns and when pushing off to the side.
A Brief Explanation of Skating Technique
In skating, the skis are positioned at an angle outward. The push-off is made using the inner edge, while the body weight is shifted entirely onto the gliding ski. The poles help with propulsion and rhythm.
Key principles include:
- stable one-legged stance
- Complete weight transfer
- controlled lateral impression
- A steady and stable upper body
- appropriate pole work
- smooth transition phase
- Safe cornering and braking techniques
A common mistake is moving too hurriedly. Short steps without a complete weight shift require a lot of effort. A steady pace with a clear glide phase is usually more effective.
Distinguishing Between Skating and Classic-Style Trails
In classic-style skiing, the skis run mostly parallel in two prepared tracks. Depending on the type of ski, traction is provided by scales, skins, climbing wax, or another type of climbing surface.
In skating, there is no traditional climbing zone. Propulsion is generated by applying pressure to the sides of the skis. Skating skis, boots, and poles are designed for this movement.
The classic double track must not be damaged by sideways skating strides. Conversely, the wide skating area should not be walked on. Local signage and the instructions of the trail staff are authoritative.
Directions from Gutenbrunn Vacation Rentals 133
The Gutenbrunn 133 vacation rentals are located east of the skating loop. On our GPS map, the accommodation is clearly marked at 48.368830 degrees north and 15.124330 degrees east. The starting point of the official GPX route is at Drei König Wegscheid.
The gold dotted line on the map means:

- Directions to the Drei König Wegscheid area
- Directions from the lodging to the trailhead
- Not part of the official GPX route
- No designated road, walking, or ski route
Whether and how the trailhead is accessible in winter depends on snow conditions, snow removal, local traffic regulations, and the current trail route. Follow the on-site signs and check before you leave to see which access point is currently designated and open.

Check the latest cross-country ski trail report
A GPX file shows the geographical route, but not the current conditions. A lack of snow, thawing, ice, storms, forestry work, or trail grooming can lead to changes or closures.
Before each round, check the following:
- Has the skating track been groomed recently?
- Has the entire round been approved?
- What is the required direction of rotation?
- Are there any icy curves or slippery sections?
- Is there a way to drive up to or access the trailhead?
- Are there any events or construction projects in the cross-country ski trail area?
- How are temperature, wind, and precipitation expected to change?
The official Gutenbrunn cross-country ski trail website currently states that the season has ended and refers to the next winter season, 2026/27. Once winter operations begin, the current trail report and information from the trail service will be the authoritative sources. Date of this summary: August 17, 2026.
Recommended Equipment
For the skating rink, we recommend:
- Skating skis of the appropriate length and stiffness
- Skating shoes with good lateral stability
- compatible bindings
- Skating poles of the appropriate length
- Breathable clothing based on the layering principle
- windproof jacket
- tight-fitting gloves
- Cap or headband
- Sports glasses or sunglasses
- Cell phone with a fully charged battery
- GPX file saved offline
- Beverage, protected from the cold
- personal medications
- small first-aid kit
Traditional cross-country skis are generally not suitable for the skating technique. If you don't have the right equipment, you should ask in advance about the availability of skating gear.
Warm Up Properly
Skating works your legs, hips, core, shoulders, and arms. A few minutes of warm-up exercises will improve your flexibility and coordination.
The following are suitable:
- a relaxed walk or trot
- Shoulder Circles
- Gentle squats
- lateral weight shifts
- Hip Mobilization
- a few smooth skating strides without applying too much pressure with the stick
You shouldn't start the first lap at a fast pace. If you want to train at a faster pace, increase the intensity only after a gentle warm-up.
Safety and Behavior on the Course
Even on an easy skating route, it’s important to be considerate and anticipate what’s ahead:
- Follow the specified direction of travel
- Walk on the right or follow the signs
- Allow faster runners to pass in a controlled manner
- Do not come to a stop before curves and downhill sections
- If you fall, clear the riding area as quickly as possible
- Keep your poles close to your body when passing
- Adjust your speed based on visibility and road surface conditions
- Respect the barriers
- Provide assistance in the event of an accident
Local rules prohibit Dogs on the Gutenbrunn cross-country trails. Pedestrians and snowshoe hikers are also prohibited from entering the trails. Use of the sports facilities is at your own risk.
Is this tour suitable for older guests?
Fitness-conscious older guests with skating experience can take advantage of the compact circuit. What matters most is not age, but balance, technique, strength, endurance, and how you feel that day.
Skating requires a stable lateral shift of weight. If you feel unsure about this, it’s better to choose a classic-style trail or start with a lesson from an expert. While the short distance makes for a manageable session, it doesn’t automatically make the technique any easier.
Skating with Kids
Children can use the track if they can skate, brake, and turn safely. Their equipment and the length of the track must be appropriate for their height and experience.
Adults should adjust the pace and duration to suit the youngest and slowest member of the group. A helmet can be especially helpful for less experienced children. Initial attempts should take place in a clear, open practice area and, if possible, under supervision.
Is the route accessible?
No. The skating rink is not barrier-free. Snow, skating technique, turns, and elevation changes require flexibility, balance, and physical endurance.
The groomed area is not a winter walking trail. For guests who do not wish to cross-country ski, separate winter hiking trails are available, depending on snow conditions and whether they are open.
