Gutenbrunn Pilgrimage and Parish Church with hosts Anna and Herbert

The Pilgrimage Church Gutenbrunn is much more than just a religious building.

Its history is closely tied to that of the Gutenbrunner Spring connected.

It centers on a special image of the Virgin Mary and the town’s centuries-old tradition of pilgrimage.

With its yellow-and-white facade and striking clock tower, the Gutenbrunn Pilgrimage Church continues to shape the character of Gutenbrunn to this day.

For our vacation guests, it’s a peaceful place steeped in history. You can explore it wonderfully on a stroll through the town center.

Parish Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The parish church in Gutenbrunn is dedicated to the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The patronal feast is celebrated on July 2.

At the heart of the religious tradition is a miraculous image of the Maria lactans. This depiction shows Mary as a nursing mother with the infant Jesus. To this day, the miraculous image links the Gutenbrunn pilgrimage church to the history of the Gutenbrunn Spring and the former pilgrimage.

The Gutenbrunn parish names the Visitation of Mary as its patron saint and describes the miraculous image as a depiction of the Virgin Mary nursing her child. Information from the St. Josef Parish Association in the Waldviertel

How Gutenbrunn Got Its Name

The name Gutenbrunn refers to a „good well“ or a special spring. People have been visiting this spring for centuries, and it has become a destination for pilgrims.

As is the case with many ancient pilgrimage sites, historical events and legends passed down orally are closely intertwined. The following stories are part of local folklore and should not be regarded as scientifically proven facts.

The Legend of the Holy Family

A Gutenbrunn legend dates back to the time of the Hussite movement in the early 15th century.

According to tradition, the Holy Family is said to have fled from Bohemia toward Mariazell. On their way, they first stopped in Schönbach at the „Schönen Bach“ and then continued on to Gutenbrunn.

It is said that she stopped there at a spring. Since that time, the water from the Gutenbrunn Spring has been considered to have special significance in popular piety.

The market town of Gutenbrunn describes this legend as the origin of the pilgrimage tradition and the town's name. History of the Gutenbrunn Spring

The Legend of the Shepherd Boy and the Miraculous Image

A second story tells of a shepherd boy and a cow. The animal is said to have gone to the spring again and again to drink there.

According to legend, the shepherd boy followed the cow and discovered an image of the Virgin Mary nursing her child at the bottom of the spring. This image of the Virgin Mary later became the miraculous image of Gutenbrunn.

The depiction of the nursing Mother of God is also known by the Latin name „Maria lactans.“ It symbolizes closeness, care, security, and maternal love.

From the Spring to the First Chapel

As the spring grew in importance, the need for a place of prayer arose. It is said that there was originally a simple wooden chapel above the spring.

Records from 1726 mention a dispute over an unauthorized chapel. There are also several stories surrounding its preservation.

In 1770, a larger chapel was built. It marked an important step in the transition from a small pilgrimage site to what would later become a church.

The Origins of Today's Church

Around 1800, the chapel tradition evolved into a castle church. The building was closely associated with the Gutenbrunn estate of that time.

Between 1807 and 1833, Emperor Franz I spent several summers in Gutenbrunn. Local place names such as the “Kaiserbankerl” still serve as reminders of this period today. A regional account of the development from a wooden chapel to a parish church is provided by the Historical Society via MeinBezirk.

The present-day church is designed as a late Baroque hall church. Particularly noteworthy are:

  • the yellow-and-white facade design
  • the three-story church tower
  • the clock towers visible from afar
  • the curved spire
  • the segmented facade with white pilasters
  • the tall windows of the nave
  • the historicist high altar
  • The Miraculous Image of Mary Nursing Her Child

Gutenbrunn Will Become an Independent Parish

Gutenbrunn originally belonged to the parish Martinsberg. It was not until the 20th century that the town developed into an independent parish.

According to information from the parish association, Gutenbrunn became a parish branch in 1953. In 1957, it was officially established as the Parish of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.

Since then, the Gutenbrunn Pilgrimage Church has been not only a historic place of pilgrimage but also the religious center of the local parish.

The Miraculous Image of Mary Nursing Her Child

The miraculous image is one of the church's most significant features. It depicts Mary with the infant Jesus in a particularly human and tender portrayal.

Mary, the nursing mother, symbolizes:

  • a mother's love
  • Sense of security
  • Care
  • Protection
  • Food and Life
  • the Mother of God's human closeness

Regardless of one's personal level of religiosity, this depiction offers insight into the religious beliefs and popular piety of earlier generations.

A place of peace and reflection

The church is also of interest to visitors who do not come to Gutenbrunn for religious reasons. The peaceful interior, the architecture, and the history make it a place for reflection.

A visit offers the opportunity to:

  • to pause for a moment
  • to view the period furnishings
  • to learn more about the town's history
  • to learn about the tradition of pilgrimages
  • to light a candle
  • to escape from everyday life for a few minutes

Visitors should respect church services, devotions, and private prayer times, and behave quietly while inside the church.

Discover the Pilgrimage Church and the Healing Spring Together

The history of the church cannot be separated from the Gutenbrunner Spring. Both are part of a shared cultural and religious heritage.

That is why we recommend that our vacation guests not only visit the church but also learn about the history of the town’s name and the spring.

It is important to note that the terms „healing,“ „miraculous,“ or „healing spring“ originate from religious and folkloric traditions. They do not indicate any medically proven effect of the water.
